Tuscaloosa Rail Crossings

Table of Contents

[Webmaster's Note: This page was developed by a former student at the University of Alabama. When he moved, he allowed me to put the page into Frograil, as a supplement to my Alabama pages. Other than linking the page to my style sheet, I've changed very little. I've not re-done the coding, nor has any attempt to update anything contained herein been made. Unfortunately, somewhere over the years, I've lost the name of the fellow who put this together.]

Notes:

The use of the term "main line" does not indicate that this is necessarily what the railroad considers to be their main line. Tables referred to as "main line" tables list the streets that would be crossed by a train moving nonstop through Tuscaloosa.

28th Ave. Grade None The pavement is patched where the tracks used to be. They may be repaving as I write this, however; in which case you won't be able to see the patching anymore.
Greensboro Ave Grade None The only indication that tracks were ever here is the "Old Train Station" bar and grill. There are no actual tracks until Bryce Hospital (see below).
21st Ave. Grade None Exactly where this crossing used to be is hard to make out.
Queen City Ave. Grade None Between here and the next crossing the right of way is elevated with kudzu-filled gullies on both sides.
Sherwood Ln. Grade None See previous note.
Robinhood Ln. Over None The trestle that used to be here is long gone.

Hackberry Lane Grade None No traces of any tracks.
Bryce Hospital Drive Grade None After this is where the tracks still remain. The section east of here was still used for a time for backing into Holt after the tracks to the west were abandoned. The tracks divide not far from here. The rest of this table deals with the south branch. The next table deals with the north branch, which went to Holt. Only the south branch continues to have track. There was once a sign at the end of the tracks which said "End Holt Manual Lock", but I haven't seen it in years. This area was once known as "Holt Junction".
McFarland Blvd. Under n/a Campus drive goes under the same bridge.
Helen Keller Blvd. Grade Yellow sign only I don't know why there is still a sign here, as the tracks haven't been used in several years. This is the last crossing before the tracks cross the Warrior Branch, at which point they become part of the KCS line to Birmingham.
